The Numbers Don’t Lie

"Theory Is No Match for Evidence"

A Note From The Author, Scott Boulch

It’s been an amazing two weeks. I could never have expected the huge response that I had to the first two reports. It seemed that the more people argued about the premise of “The Death Of AdSense” the more we grew and the more people argued.

What was also unexpected was the meltdown of a brand new Dell server, the four attempts to hack into our data base, and the two sets of people that tried to game the system with false opt-ins. Through it all we were prepared, backed up, and secure.

I’ve had so many people poking around my servers and websites and even driving by my mailing address, trying to find out where I live, that I feel like I just left the proctologist's office.

I apologize to anyone that received duplicate emails or anyone who got a bit confused during the meltdown and attacks. We had to move quickly and think on our feet to keep things running smoothly, and a few details slipped through the cracks as we dealt with the issues at hand.

You hold in your hands a special supplemental report to “The Death of AdSense” and the “Life After AdSense” reports that have now been distributed to over 32,000 people over the last two weeks.

This report contains a summary of the findings of the survey, as well as sample comments from survey participants, and some conclusions based on the results of the survey.

This data has not only allowed me to get a clear idea of the needs of a very large population of Internet Marketers, but has also provided hard evidence, (even more disturbing than I first imagined), supporting the concepts in “The Death Of AdSense” and “Life After AdSense”.

To date, this is the largest population of Internet Marketers that has ever been surveyed on any topic. The results will speak for themselves.

It has been said that “Theory Is No Match for Evidence”, and I urge you to draw your own conclusions from “The Numbers Don’t Lie”. Regardless of your personal experience however, it has opened my eyes to a huge need in the marketplace to move up the internet marketing food chain.

Based on the results, I am developing several products, and will reveal more details on my plans at the end of this report.

Thanks again to the thousands of people who took the time to complete the survey. I have enjoyed reading your responses, sharing your stories, and I feel your pain!

A Final Note on “The Death Of AdSense” campaign

Who Took The Survey?

No personal information or names were collected at the point of the survey, but the population of over 32,000 readers is like a who’s who of internet marketing. Some of the names that opted in were some of my top hero’s in the online world. They mailed their lists, and based on their customer base, we have a very tight grouping in the list of 32,000 readers.

There were a few anomalies. We had a small part of the list (less than 5%) that was generated from generic business opportunity seekers, and one persons list who's members were very adept at affiliate marketing and CPA networks to begin with.

We even had a few AdSense “Gurus” mail their list, and that has made for some interesting reading from the comments section of the survey.

All in all, the mix of population covered just about every niche in the Internet Marketing world -- every level of experience and income -- but again, those that completed the survey were primarily Internet Marketers.

Since there was no personal information collected, the results are also, for the most part, unbiased. Other than the occasional flamer, there was no incentive for a survey participant to “fudge the numbers” or misrepresent their answers in any way.

The survey was also large enough, and offered to such a concentrated group that, in fact, “The Numbers Don’t Lie”

Questions, Results, Conclusions, and Comments

1. How many years have you been earning money online?

Conclusion: Obviously a very large part of the population is new to internet marketing. The next most popular responses were between 6 months and two years with a small spike of "Old Timers" at the 5 plus years catagory.
2. How many individual websites do you currently have online?

Conclusion: The relatively small number of sites that each respondent had suggests that they are predominantly White Hat site builders. Almost all Black Hat techniques employ the use of large numbers of websites in a shotgun approach, whereas a smaller number of sites suggest that they are more than likely content rich, White Hat sites that provide a good visitor experience. This also may suggests a large number of Blog sites, especially taking into account the large number of new marketers in the survey!

3. Are you currently, or have you in the past, earned income from the AdSense program?
  Response Percent
   Yes
51.6%
   No
48.4%
Conclusion: This question had logic coded into it so that if a respondent clicked no, (that they had never participated in the AdSense program), it would completely skip the next set of questions about AdSense. This was to insure that only those respondents with personal experience with the AdSense program were allowed to respond to the following questions.
4. How long have you been earning income from Google AdSense?

Conclusion: Interestingly, of those respondents who had participated in the AdSense program, most had done so for 1-2 years! Fully 61.6% of those that have participated in the AdSense program have done so for 6 months or greater.

Conclusion: This result surprised even me! The conclusion is obvious, people are simply not earning much income with the AdSense program. Some of the detailed response I got asked me why I did not include a $0.00 to $100.00 category, and, as it turns out, the numbers might have been even worse had I included that category. The bottom line is, AdSense is just not a strong money maker for the majority of those who use it! In total, 71.2% earn less than $500 a month with AdSense!
6. What percentage of your total online income is from AdSense?

Conclusion: This suggests that AdSense in general, as a way of monetizing sites, is more of an afterthought by most website owners. Based on this number, most internet marketers are monetizing their sites using other methods as their primary revenue source for their sites.
7. Has your AdSense income dropped since you first began the program?
  Response Percent

Conclusion: Again the results here are obvious, for those who do participate in the AdSense program, 53.4%,over half of them, have seen it drop. And 60.5% of those surveyed have been generating income with AdSense for less than 12 months, they may have started after the effect of smart pricing.
8. Please tell me about the drop in your AdSense income!

A sample of answers respondents gave to this question

From an average for previous years of $2200 a month to an average of less than $100 a month for year 2006.
From $36,017.48 in one month to $1,610.68. Heartbreaking!
The decline in my Adsense revenue began with the month of July. The check received a the end of August for the month of July was a 50% drop. The check due at the end of September for August earnings is a 57% drop. From the looks of things, earnings for this month, September, will be a 68% drop barring any miracles. I always knew that the Adsense game was too good to last!
Dropped from an average of $450.00 a month to $150.00 a month.
A year and a half ago I was averaging $15,000 a month and now Im lucky if I receive a $100 check from Google.
I was making as much as $600/day and it was very exciting, I thought I finally proved that I could make it online after trying for years. Anyway my income would cut in half about every 4-6 weeks or so, I would wake up the next day I was only make 300/day than 150/day then 75/day, now I am lucky to make $5-10/day.
It drops from $154/month to $46/month on average.
It dropped from between $100 - $150 per month to under $20 per month and sometimes under $10 per month
Didn't get into it until July 2005. Man, did I ever pick the wrong time.
Colossal ! Painful. Scary. Has finally made me realize I need to get out of it and into more realistic business models.
My highest day was $900. Now I average $4 a day.
Drop??? hell, my sole check (not delivered because it was not worth the time for me to get an irs number so it is still sitting there on their books) is $1.84. Don't spend it all in one place!!!
My AdSense income began to drop in October, 2005, and has slowly gone down to where it is now approximately 1/4 what it was for the majority of 2005.
From over 30K per month to less than 4K but we viewed it as funny money from the beginning.
Went from $100-120 per month down to like $7 to $10 per month.
It happened overnight - I thought it was a bad dream!
I was over $10,000 a month when the bottom dropped out. The next check went down to $4500, the next went down to $2000, the next went down to $700. Now I'm right at $400 a month with about 150 sites! Needless to say, Google isn't my favorite right now.
It dropped from over $800 per month to less than $150 per month.
My average monthly adsense cheque used to be $50,000. This month I will make $2000.
I'm earning pennies from the clicks that I used to earn dollars.
From a high of $10000/July 05 to current $600/mo, while creating more and "better" VRE
Dropped from an average of 500-800 per month down to an average of 50 per month
As per your report, it declined once content bids came in from a peak of around $1200 down to $120.
went from $600+ to $30 overnight
in some cases 1 click could be equivalent to $4-$5 and now it's $0.10 and sometimes less.
What AdSense income! Lots of Hype. Lots of work to get a quality "Content" site. Making about .05 cents/hour worked.
When Google changed the rules it went from about $1000 per month to $100
My best month in Adsense was a little over $10,000.00 Now, I average about $4 a day.
$400/month to $100/month. Just for kicks I put a form on a site for people to request online college info. $22/lead. In the first 2 months that form exceeded income from my all my adsense. I am looking to convert my sites.
I was bringing in $350-$400 every month until July. Now I am lucky to bring in $50-$60 a month. Some days I have a $0 balance from 38 sites that run adsense. The impressions is there, but the clicks are not.
The drop has been dramatic. I used to get $5500 dollars or more a month. Now I'm lucky if I break the $100 mark, and that's with adding more sites. I have since been looking for other revenue streams, so I am MORE than ready to dump Adsense.
went from about $10,000 a month to less than $1,000 within about a week
Are we allowed to swear here?
now it takes about 70X more clicks to earn the same revenue I made the first year I was in the program.
Dropped from $4,000 a month to $250 !!!!!
it went from averaging 1500 a month to less then 300 now. Yahoo has gone the same route. I agree with you there has to be a better way.
I came along about the time the bottom dropped. I spent $100 on obtaining 150 Adsense ready-made sites only to learn shortly after that those types of sites will no longer be relevant to Google since they will stop indexing them.
It was always pathetic. I've never thought it was worth taking seriously so haven't ever been sucked in by the so-called guru Adsense promoters.
Once I put my sights up over a year ago, it took months to make a few cents. I peaked out late last year at about $250. From then on, it has been a slow decline. I currently average around $3.00 per day and it seems that is drifting down slowly.
Dropped by over 70% over the past 6 months.
$100+ per day in May 05 $4-6 per day in Aug 06
30k a month to 1k a month Scott its XXX XXX need I say more
from over 7,000 a month to it's current $400 or $500 (groan!)
Conclusion: There were thousands of these types of responses, and it took the better part of a day to comb through them. The written responses were consistent, and minor exceptions all told the same story, weather their incomes were large or small, beginner or old timer, they were consistent throughout.

12. What did you like BEST about "The Death Of Adsense"

A sample of answers respondents gave to this question

The facts. I was unaware of "Smart Pricing". I -- like so many others -- have been told for ages that Adsdense is the bees knees.

You have the guts to stand against those who will do anything to make money at others' expense.

Your blatent honesty and detailed explanation.

You helped me to understand some of why I am spending more money than what I am bringing in.

You articulated what had been gnawing in my craw for years. My mind nodded in assent so many times I thought my head would roll down on to my lap.

That you had the balls to write it. :-)

Your honest approach about how your own sites have been under performing financially unlike the bs other interneters say they are performing to sell you their new unbelievable products....

The education. I was scratching my head trying to figure out how to make the money others have said they make, now I know, I was just too late for the party, the hot chicks had already left with someone els, and I was stuck with dogs.

It seems to be a genuine blueprint from a guy who is actually doing it. I have bought thousands of dollars of bullshit ebooks, home study courses, teleseminars, etc and have got more bang for my buck in a free report. Makes me feel like there is still some gold in then there hills.

the simple mathematics that show facts and not the abbility to write convincing copy

Finding out that gogle made it possible to split the ad cost between the search engines and adsense. I had no idea and I'm sure that many more are in the same boat.

It was one of the best example of viral marketing I have seen.

The courage to stand out and tell people what the "gurus" are terrified to say!

Apart from the humourous and upbeat wrinting style, the information, or rather, explanation of the "smart pricing" concept was very enlightening. As one who has never bothered with AdSense but has dealt with AdWords, I now understand the why Google bothers with the content Network. Also, I never knew how money was made using AdSense or about the basic hierarchy of the Internet Foodchain. Basically, the ENTIRE report was the "best part". Given the fact that it was completely free, I'm pleased with it's brutal honesty and in-depth information. A definite must read for anyone involved in any aspect of Internet Marketing Thank You Scott!

i liked the fact that you have the balls to tell the gurus that they dont know what they are talking about , and that you are interested in helping people achieve the level of financial freedom that they have only dreamt about ....

It is very candid and engaging report. Jn addition to being informative it promises a solution for a desperate confused internet marketing "wannabe" who is led the nose by the Gurus to spend thousand of dollars every few weeks for useless products. I have to hide my credit card statements from my family to save me from their outrage.

The "Boulch Business Rules" and the introducttion to a new way of thinking

Explaination of the food chain. I was running around with blinders on not really seeing the "Big Picture" It doesn't take too long to get wrapped up in the day to day trials of marketing and not step back to anyalize and modify.

All publishers know the impact of smart pricing, but I liked the way you came out and exposed things which people are aware of but not willing to speak about.

The truth. I even recieved one email from a marketer that bashed what you were preaching and said NOT to use your idea.

that it exposes the fact that Adsense isn't what it once was. I have a friend who has built over 300 Adsense sites on the recommendation of a "Guru's" program and bought some very expensive "Adsense optimized websites" and is quite dismayed that he only makes about $40 to $100 a month (not even anywhere near enough to cover his hosting). He thinks he needs more sites up and running so this report will show him that it's time to stop.

You tell it like it is. I have bought all kinds of junk trying to make money. Your info is a breath of fresh air.

1-It took guts to write this book, and I admire people who tell it like it is. 2-It is a real eye opener for those FEW who had made an unequivoal decision to achive success via internet marketing, but were stopped cold from the smart pricing plague. 3-It literally shook up the word of internet marketing “gurus. Hopefully from now on, they will think twice about marketing their trash to affiliate newcomers.

Gave me real hope that there is a better way to create passive income than the whitehat authoritive site for adsense that I've been pursuing for the last 18 months and still waiting for my first cheque! Also your past successes with making good money and having similar business rules.

The typing  ( Scott here, LOL This is  my favorite response!)

"You might be ready for life after Adsense if..." I laughed so hard I had tears in my eyes!!! Luckily I've only spent about $150.00 on "Guru" e-books.

What I liked most was that You knew telling people the truth about Adsense would create much backlash from the "Gurus" and You did it anyway! My kind of style, who cares what they (The Gurus) think! As they say sometimes the truth hurts! I thought it was great!

...most marketers sell "make money crap" to other internet marketers. - That's Digital Incest!

The down-to-earth explanation of the impact of Google's smart pricing practice. I definitely understand the rationale from Google's prospective to implement smart pricing. It was business decision to protect their future revenue base and by reducing their advertisers' unprofitable adsense costs as it relates to their income. I now have a clear picture of why my own AdSense earnings have dropped from $3000 a month to $300 a month in a short period of time.

It really made me re-think everything I thought I knew about Adsense!

The understanding of what happened to the promise of good returns that were promised by our mentors. It's not so much that we screwed up on the sites as Google changed the rules that our mentors had been doing business by.

This was the first informational pdf that I didn't feel was full of a bunch of BS. I had to laugh everytime you mentioned the 100's spent on unread and unused material. I'm that person! I'm so ashamed! My last purchase was XXXX (deleted to protect the guilty) membership. Everything you wrote makes so much sense. I have even recieved 5 e-mails from "guru's" in fear of your report. The same guru's who keep trying to sell me adsense stuff. I'm done! I am really going to try some click flipping very soon! I'm not going to jump right in since I don't really know how to build the type of website that I need. I would love any help you can give. I would also be willing to be a case study if you need one! I learn quickly! :) Thanks again for such a great report.

I didn't know that Adsense had died until I read the bloody report! Why have the guru's been keeping this info out of there earnings claims? I have just spent $2000 on a load of software that was sold based obviousley on pre smart pricing incomes. Ouch!! Thanks for letting me know Scot.

Your no bullshit, upfront, DETAILED approach, and your sense of humour. I really am shitted off with all the promises and "just a $49.95 investment and I'll reveal ALL...Bull Shit" Yours was FREE and packed with info not adfo...(

That you talk like a 'regular guy' and didn't try to squeeze me (and squeeze me again, and again) for money before giving me info. The info was very, very, valuable and I am grateful to God for you and for maybe NOW, finally, having an easier way of trying to make a living online.

Your adventure with "HER"...Getting to know "HER"...Getting hitched to "HER"...Your short honeymoon with "HER"... getting gilted and ditched by "HER"...And finally coming to your senses and found enlightenment...All in just 18 pages of pure, factual and truthful content that others dare not or want to reveal.

Up front, no bullshit information about Adsense. Giving the kind of information that I have not heard from any Adsense Gurus even after being on their mailing lists for many months.

It made perfect sense and really explained why we have seen our checks from google go from 4k to $180.00.

All the controversy it caused...I LOVE a shit-stirrer!!! ...and a close second is the potential to learn how to MAKE MONEY

It was true to its word about delivering the goods. No hoops to jump through. Nice not to be back ended, upselled, or one time offered. Might be the greatest freebie gift of all time. Real Masterpiece of a promotion. I've been analyzing the website design, theme, writing style as well as the unstoppable virulence of the promotion. Controversy is very viral.

It brought to the publics attention and validated what a lot of us already suspected. And made it clear why some 'gurus' where willing to sell there adsense secrets. The saw the end in sight!

To be honest the 50 cents offer. I mean if you were going to sell me something I could always say no. And if there was no money I didn't lose anything It was new and different and if the info did turn out to be good (I'm still an optimist although I don't know why) then it would be one of the few times I wouldn't be disappointed and restore some of my faith in netkind.

Scott, you dispensed information I would have gladly paid for... and it was FREE! You definitely gained a lot of credibility in my eyes and I look forward to any additional information or tools you might come out with. Thanks again Scott!!!

I got enough information to realize I was wasting money paying a monthly membership Adsense coaching site. The specifics about how it died were extremely clear.

Watching the gurus falling over themselves trying to make you look like you didn't know what you were talking about, lol.

It's the truth

Conclusion: 71.2% of respondents earn less than $500 per month. The simple truth is the majority of respondents are not making significant income from their online efforts. Only 8% earn in excess of $60,000 per year.

27. You have experienced first hand the power of a controversial topic, and the power of the custom software than ran this promotion. We are approaching 25,000 opt ins in just 9 days, in a very difficult market "Internet Marketers" and have hit #424 on Alexa's most popular website list. Although this was never our intent, many savvy marketers have already asked us to make this custom set of scripts available as a product. If we released access to these customs scripts now called "The List Virus" at some point in the future, would you have an interest?
  Response Percent
   Yes

   No
18.7%
Conclusion: A vast majority of respondents were also interested in the method used to run the campaign. This suggests a huge demand for viral list building software.

Congratulations Perry! You have obviously save thousands of people thousands of dollars and are The Man when it comes to AdWords!

It was awesome to see Cory’s name still at the top of the lists so I ran it down to twelve to include him.

Also my friend Joel Comm came in at number 5, congratulations Joel on your massive success this year. Joel and I may disagree on the current state of AdSense as a huge money maker, but one thing is not debatable, if you are going to play the AdSense game, Joel is your coach!

Products In Development

Based on the feedback of this survey I have outlined a plan for product development and rollout. I spent the better part of three days reading your written responses to the survey and three huge needs became apparent.

  • An automation solution for the advanced marketer, designed to run Click Flipping on a large scale.

  • A Click Flipping 101 solution for new to mid level internet marketers, with at least some basic knowledge of marketing online.

  • A product to answer the need for a viral list building solution.

Also, there were a lot of brand new marketers that need to begin at the beginning, and are not even ready for a Click Flipping 101 solution at this point. For this group I will be recommending two other products that I used to get my start, and that I consider pre-requisites for any Click Flipper.

Based on your requests, here are my immediate plans for products.

1) Automation: The first product I will be brining to the market is an automation solution geared toward the mid to upper level marketer that has a strong foundation of experience.

For many months now I have been automating my Click Flipping process. Recently I have instructed my programmers to make it a multi-user application. I then included a few key internet marketers in a beta test.

There have been many heated discussions about the release of this software to the public. All of the beta testers wanted to keep this to a very small group of users, and not sold or opened up to the public in any way.

After a great deal of thought, I have decided to make this available to a very small percentage of the market. In order not to dilute the effectiveness of the software, I will make this available to less than 1.5% of the people that are on my list.

This product is definitely not for the Newbie or weak at heart! It is a high level solution that requires basic understanding and experience with Google AdWords, and basic HTML, and landing page design skills.

Pleas do me a favor and DO NOT PURCHASE THIS PRODUCT, if you do not have at least a basic comfort level with these two things. It will only create frustration, and its like trying to drive a Ferrari on your first day of drivers education.

Normally I would release this solution later, but since I've been using it myself, and since making the changes to allow multiple users is an easy change to make, this will be available in the very near future (days not weeks).

This product will also be priced for the mid to upper level marketer. I've spent many months automating the process and a huge amount of money in the development. This will not be an inexpensive solution, and the scripts will only be available as a web based application in order to protect the code from pirates and copy cats! Based on that, we will be allowing people to use the software on a monthly subscription only!

2) Click Flipping 101: Next on the list of products to roll out will be a complete solution for the majority of the list! The two biggest requests were for additional detailed training and next, a subscription-based, members-only website.

I am moving forward with the membership site simply because no advanced comprehensive eBook, or blueprint, or audio visual training course, could answer questions, coach, or train on an ongoing basis.

Your success as a Click Flipper is not a one time event. Learning to live and thrive higher up the internet marketing food chain requires ongoing education and training.

Together we will build a community of Click Flippers with: online forums, detailed written training, sample code, templates, recorded coaching calls, tele-seminars, and audio and video training.

This solution while not Free, will be priced so that the majority of the public can take advantage of it.

This is much a more comprehensive solution to build and is currently in the design phase. I plan to make this available in the very near future.

3) The List Virus: We had such a large number of requests during the first two weeks of the campaign for the software that runs the viral promotion, that we began development of a web based solution so everyone that needs to build a list in their niche can apply the power of The List Virus Software.

This product is currently in development and should be available within the next 60 days.

A Final Note on
“The Death Of AdSense” Campaign

The last two weeks have been an absolute blast for me. I have had more fun getting to know you through your emails, posts, Blogs, and survey results.

I knew there was a huge need in the market for someone to finally "Tell The Truth", and offer some better solutions to thousands of entrepreneurs trying to escape the cubicle.

In just two short weeks we have attracted nearly 33,000 people to this message.

I never imagined in my wildest dreams how great that need was or how well the message would be received. Your responses were sometimes positive, funny, sad, angry, hopeful, but always from the heart. Honestly, I was blown away by them, and will have them to look back on when the arrows fly!

By stepping out of bounds and opening up this can of worms I have at least started the conversation that maybe AdSense is not the end all, be all that so many claim it is. And since that conversation has started, and so many have stepped back and re-evaluated their online efforts, you can now make some better informed decisions.

The bottom line is "The Numbers Don't Lie!"

It seems that you and I have started the basis for a great long term relationship, even though not too many "Gurus" will be asking me over to dinner!

There are great things to come, and for some of you, a whole new world of income, living higher up the food chain!

I would like to thank a few people that helped make this all possible.

To Todd Thompson, you are truly the black belt of programmers, without your on-the-fly assistance, we would have crashed and burned with this much traffic. To John Jonas and Nana Gilbert-Baffoe, thanks for your advice and support, you really are the next generation of true leaders in the industry and you should each be proud to call yourself a non-guru!

Matt Marshall, it worked! Your guidance has been amazing, and thanks for showing me how to make sense out of my writing style, even if words are spissmelled. To Brent at eCoverFrog, your ability to take my ideas and make them graphically come alive is amazing, you put the pictures to the words, and they match!

To Jim Edwards, although we only had lunch briefly last year, you are the master of the "Smack down!" Your story and style were a huge inspiration to me, and yes, you are the red Hawaiian shirt Jim! Thanks "vicariously" for your inspiration.

To Ryan Deiss, thanks for all of your perspective and advice and being one of the first to have the guts to move beyond AdSense, and tell others to do the same.

And finally to Keith Baxter, I think our brains are wired the same; it's been like having an older brother walking me through this process, and I have enjoyed our many marathon phone calls. You are truly a Whale in the industry and the strength of your character is obvious. See you on the beaches my friend!
